Over the past week there’s been lots of attention on green jobs - I went to the launch of the report ” Who are the Green Collar Workers?”, then was part of a workshop discussion at Powershift 2009 on “What is a green job?”. Through the Trade Secrets project we’ve been capturing the stories of those in traditional jobs who have embraced environmental or sustainable skills as part of their business as usual approach and have turned their jobs green. The participants at Powershift not only wanted to know where the green jobs will be but also were keen to find out how they could green their job. (seems like an opportunity for careers advisers here!) The keeness of the participants to be identified as working in a green way supported the results of last year’s Gen Green survey where 87% of the young tradespeople respondents wanted to learn or know more about green skills. There’s much discussion about what is a green job, so how do you identify yourself?
